National Service - Episode 1

I joined Proctor and Gamble on City Road Newcastle in 1953, direct from school in Bishop Auckland. I had three A levels, but witnessing the hardship my dear mother went through in getting my elder brother through University, I decided against following him. In any event, as I had failed my 11 +, I joined King James 1st Grammar School at Bishop Auckland in the third year, so catch up, especially in French was particularly difficult and I consequently failed French at O level, an essential for matriculation. So as I was still studying, going on day release and night classes I was deferred from National Service. I progressed with my studies and gained my Higher Certificate in Chemistry and later progressed further. Having met my soulmate Ann and fallen in love and wanting to settle down it, seemed appropriate to get my Army Service over with. So I cancelled my deferment and opted to do my National Service. A Veteran's Remembrance Weekend

Being a regular at the Prudhoe Riverside Cafe, which I attend after cheering on the Park Runs (Seniors on a Saturday and Juniors on a Sunday) I was intrigued one Saturday to find the adjoining room to the cafe fully occupied. As a curious fellow, I ventured in and found it was a Service Veterans Meeting. As a veteran myself I was made very welcome by Catherine, the lady organising the event and was promptly invited to order a breakfast. I enjoyed chatting with the other ex-service personnel and made many new friends. I attended subsequent meetings and was overwhelmed and honoured to be asked to attend the local Remembrance Day Ceremonies in Prudhoe especially as I would be carrying the Veteran's Wreath. On Saturday 11th November I attended the ceremony at the commemorative area known as The Glade, just off Prudhoe High Street. National Service Episode 2

This is part two of Dad's reflections on his National Service. So began my National Service in Aden. Our squad was quickly allocated to the various Companies of the Battalion and thankfully issued with Khaki Drill uniforms to match the weather. Khaki Drill shorts were the order of the day and except on parades we went shirtless. However you were charged if you reported sick with sunburn, there was no Factor 40 sunscreen in those days! Our purpose in Aden was to prevent the unrest which was prevalent in the Protectorate. To help combat this we had frequent drills armed with dust bin lids and batons to bang on the lids. What a deterrent! On one occasion the rioters rather unwisely cut through an electric cable and several were subsequently electrocuted. Our stay in Aden was rather short but we were able to assist passengers en route to Australia with their haggling in the local shops. The merchants were not happy with us for sharing our superior bargaining skills with the tourists.
